77th Street Regional Jail In Custody Death NRF005-20bm
**The following information is
based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues
to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical
and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The
Department's understanding of the facts and circumstances may
change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is investigating an in-custody death which occurred in the 77th Street Regional Jail.
On January 13, 2020, around 10:00 a.m., Police Officer II Philip Gray, Serial No. 42065 and Police Officer II Ryan Nichols, Serial No. 42081, Southeast Area, transported a private person's arrestee, later identified as Laila Safdari, to 77th Street Regional Jail. Safdari was booked at 77th Street Regional Jail without incident. On January 14, 2020, at 7:10 a.m., Safdari was pronounced dead by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and is handling the investigation.
